Yes, you can see at night with ceramic tint, but the shade matters more than the film type. Every tint lets less light reach your eyes, so darker shades make night driving harder. Of the shades we install at Level Up Detailing in Lexington, NC, 35% and 50% keep night visibility closest to untinted glass.
This Sunday, Nov 1, the clocks fall back, and sunset in Lexington moves from 6:26 PM on Saturday to 5:25 PM on Sunday, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory. Suddenly a lot of Triad drives home happen in the dark. In this blog, we’ll explain what each tint shade means after dark, what North Carolina law allows, and how to pick a shade you’ll be happy with all year.

Key Takeaways
- Shade decides night visibility: 50% film lets in about half the light, and 5% lets in about 5%.
- Darker is harder at night: studies link darker windows with weaker contrast vision, especially for older drivers.
- NC’s line is 35%: most side and rear windows must let in at least 35% of light, so 35% and 50% are the legal choices for front side windows.
- Darker shades have limited uses: 5%, 15% and 20% fit windows behind the driver on pickups and minivans, or a vehicle with a medical exception permit.
- Shop prices: ceramic tint starts at $199 for two front windows, with full cars from $450.
Can You See at Night With Ceramic Tint?
You can, as long as the shade fits how you drive. Ceramic film’s main jobs are cutting heat and UV. It doesn’t make anything brighter, and it doesn’t improve night vision. At night, the percentage on the film matters most. The lighter the shade, the closer your view stays to untinted glass after dark.
That percentage is called VLT, or visible light transmission. Film maker XPEL defines it as the share of visible light that passes through the film, so a lower number means a darker tint. Whatever the film type, a 20% film lets in about a fifth of the light.
Does Window Tint Make It Harder to See at Night?
It can, and the darker the film, the bigger the effect. Tint reduces the light reaching your eyes from everything outside, including a pedestrian, a deer or the edge of the road. Studies of tinted car windows have found weaker contrast vision and later detection at dusk, with older drivers affected most.
In one 2000 study, researchers tested 20 drivers through a stock window and windows with 37% and 18% transmittance. For drivers in their 20s, the 37% window didn’t significantly reduce contrast sensitivity, but the 18% window did at finer detail levels. For drivers in their 60s, even the 37% window significantly reduced it.
A Virginia Transportation Research Council study asked 24 drivers to spot a pedestrian in their mirrors at dusk. More tint went with more missed detections and shorter detection distances, though results varied between drivers.
Which Tint Shade Is Best for Night Driving?
For drivers who are on the road a lot after dark, 50% is the lightest shade we install and the closest to untinted glass. 35% is a step darker and is North Carolina’s minimum for most windows. Darker shades of 20%, 15% and 5% cut night visibility much more and are only legal on certain windows.

How our five Union and Hitek ceramic shades compare:
| Shade | Light It Lets Through | Night Visibility | Legal on NC Front Side Windows? | Where It Fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50% | About half | Closest to untinted glass of our shades | Yes | Frequent night drivers who want heat and UV protection |
| 35% | About a third | A step darker; one study found a 37% window affected drivers in their 60s | Yes, NC’s minimum | Front side and rear windows on most cars |
| 20% | About a fifth | Noticeably darker after dark | No | Windows behind the driver on pickups and minivans, or with a medical permit |
| 15% | About 15% | Darker still | No | Same as 20% |
| 5% | About 5% | The hardest to see through at night | No | Same as 20% |

What Is the Darkest Legal Tint in NC?
For most side and rear windows, it’s 35%. Under G.S. 20-127, a tinted window must let through at least 35% of light, and a window that measures more than 32% on an approved meter is presumed to comply. Reflectance must be 20% or less, and the film can’t be red, yellow or amber.
The statute lists exceptions. They include windows behind the driver on a multipurpose vehicle (the law names minivans and pickup trucks), the rear window of a property-hauling vehicle, and vehicles with a medical exception permit. The medical permit covers conditions that make you photosensitive to visible light, and your doctor completes NCDMV’s form.
One change worth knowing: NCDMV says that as of Dec 1, 2025, window-tint checks are no longer part of NC safety inspections. Your tint must still comply with G.S. 20-127, and if you’re pulled over, you must roll down the window on the side the officer approaches. This isn’t legal advice, so check G.S. 20-127 or NCDMV for your vehicle.
How Can You See Better at Night With Tinted Windows?
Start with clean glass inside and out, since smears and streaks show up more at night. Turn your dash lights down, skip sunglasses after sunset, use high beams when it’s safe, and leave extra space. Choosing a lighter shade for your front side windows matters too.
The American Optometric Association suggests looking toward the fog line instead of oncoming headlights, and AAA recommends yearly eye exams as you age.
Deer are the other reason to take this seriously. NCDOT’s animal crash report counted 65,470 animal crashes statewide from 2023 to 2025, about 90% involving deer. November alone made up 24%, and the 6 PM to 9 PM hours added up to about a third of all crashes. Guilford County, home to Oak Ridge, ranked second in the state with 2,171. If you’re weighing ceramic window tint for Oak Ridge drivers, a lighter shade makes sense for those darker evening commutes.

Frequently Asked Questions
How bad is 20% tint at night?
It lets in about a fifth of the light, darker than the 37% window that reduced older drivers’ contrast vision in one study, and below NC’s 35% minimum for most windows. Call or text (336) 780-7868 to talk through your options.
Is 5% tint too dark?
For night driving and for most windows under NC law, yes. It’s only legal on exempt windows, like those behind the driver on a pickup or minivan, or with a medical exception permit. Call or text (336) 780-7868 with questions.
Is 35% or 50% tint better for night driving?
50% lets in more light, so it stays closest to untinted glass at night. 35% is NC’s minimum for most windows and is a step darker. Call or text (336) 780-7868 to set up an appointment.
Can I get darker tint in NC for a medical reason?
Yes, if your doctor certifies a condition that makes you photosensitive to visible light. NCDMV’s Drivers Medical Evaluation Program issues a permit listing the vehicle and windows. Call or text (336) 780-7868 once you have your permit.
Does ceramic tint look darker than regular tint?
Not at the same shade. The percentage tells you how much light gets through, whatever the film type, and we install ceramic tint only. Call or text (336) 780-7868 to talk about shades.
How much is ceramic window tint at Level Up Detailing?
Two front windows are $199, coupes, sedans, hatchbacks and trucks are $450, and non-commercial SUVs and vans are $499. Windshield strips start at $80. Call or text (336) 780-7868 to set up an appointment.
Final Thoughts on Whether You Can See at Night With Ceramic Tint
