Do You Need PPF, or Is Ceramic Coating Enough?

By Mike Holland, Owner

For most drivers, ceramic coating vs PPF isn’t a close call: a ceramic coating is enough. At Level Up Detailing in Lexington, NC, we install Owner’s Pride ceramic coatings with 3, 5, 7 and 9-year warranties, starting at $1,199, plus ceramic window tint. Film only earns its place on a front end that takes a lot of rock chips.

If you drive in from Pfafftown, you know how much your car goes through. Forsyth County’s pollen season runs from early February through late October, summers bring plenty of 90-degree days, and our Lexington shop is about 25 miles away, mostly by NC-150 and I-40. So when people ask about ceramic coating vs PPF, the real question is what your car needs. In this blog, we’ll compare the two and show why most drivers start with a coating and ceramic tint.

Key Takeaways

  • Different jobs: a ceramic coating protects the finish of the whole car, while paint protection film (PPF) is a clear film that takes rock-chip impacts.
  • Coating first: a coating helps your paint resist UV fading, bird droppings, tree sap, road film and water spots, and it makes washing much faster.
  • Honest limits: a coating won’t stop rock chips, and it doesn’t make paint scratch-proof.
  • Tint is the other half: ceramic window tint cuts heat and UV inside the car, and every tint job comes with a lifetime warranty.
  • Film where it counts: we don’t install PPF ourselves, but if your front end needs film, we can arrange it through a partner.

Ceramic Coating vs PPF at a Glance

Ceramic coating vs PPF comes down to coverage and impact. A coating is a hard, slick layer that protects the finish of the entire car from the things it sees every day. PPF is a clear film that works as a physical barrier against rocks and road debris, usually on the front end. Many owners only ever need the coating.

Here’s how they compare:

Ceramic coatingPaint protection film (PPF)
What it helps withUV fading, bird droppings, tree sap, road film and water spots; much easier washingRock chips, scuffs and road debris on the areas it covers
Rock chipsWon’t prevent rock chips or impact damageBuilt to take impacts as a sacrificial layer
CoverageThe whole car: paint, trim, wheel faces, and head and tail lightsOften just high-impact areas, such as the bumper and hood, or the full car

What a Ceramic Coating Does for Your Whole Car

A ceramic coating adds a hard, slick layer over your clear coat. It helps the paint resist UV fading, bird droppings, tree sap, road film and water spots, and dirt lets go so easily that washing goes much faster. Your paint also keeps its gloss far longer than it would with wax or a sealant.

That covers what most cars deal with day to day. Pollen, sap and bird droppings land on every panel, not just the front bumper, so whole-car protection matters. Our exterior packages coat the body, trim, wheel faces, and head and tail lights. Every warrantied exterior package also includes single-stage paint correction to reduce swirls and light scratches first, since a coating locks in whatever is under it. If your paint needs more, two-stage correction (a full cut and polish) is available at an additional charge. An exterior package takes about 48 to 72 hours.

Does Ceramic Coating Stop Rock Chips?

No. A ceramic coating won’t stop rock chips. Car and Driver says a coating can resist minor scratches and chemical etching, but it “won’t prevent deeper scratches, rock chips, or other impact damage.” That’s the one job where film does something a coating can’t, and it’s mostly a front-end problem.

We’d rather tell you that up front. A coating protects the finish from the slow damage that dulls paint over time, but a rock at highway speed is an impact, and film is what’s built to absorb it. Is a Self-Healing Coating the Same as Film?

No. Our 9-year coating is dual-layer and self-healing, so light wash marks and fine marring can relax out with heat from the sun or hot water. That’s great for keeping dark paint looking sharp, but it’s about wash marks, not rock chips. Learn more about self-healing ceramic coating.

Is Ceramic Window Tint Worth Adding to a Coating?

Yes. A coating protects the outside of your car, and ceramic window tint protects the inside. Ceramic film cuts heat and blocks UV through your glass, so your cabin stays cooler and your seats and dash get less sun. Together, they protect the whole car, inside and out.

We install Union and Hitek ceramic window film in 5%, 15%, 20%, 35% and 50%, and 50% is our lightest shade. Even a light ceramic film rejects real heat, as we explain in does light ceramic tint block heat. North Carolina’s limit for most windows is 35%, so darker shades go only on windows where the law allows them or with a medical exception. Every tint job comes with a lifetime warranty.

Ceramic tint is $199 for two front windows, $450 for coupes, sedans, hatchbacks and trucks, and $499 for non-commercial SUVs and vans. Tinting a full car takes the majority of a day, so it’s a drop-off and pick-up job. See all the details on our ceramic window tint page.

Which Is Better for a Daily Driver?

In the ceramic coating vs PPF debate, a coating plus ceramic tint is the better buy for most daily drivers. A coating covers every panel against UV, pollen, sap and bird droppings, and tint keeps the cabin cooler. Film on the front end is an add-on for drivers whose bumper and hood take a lot of rock chips.

Think about how your car actually lives. If it sits outside under trees or sees a long pollen season, as it does around Pfafftown and the rest of Forsyth County, a coating does most of the work. If you put a lot of highway miles on a car you love, that’s when it’s worth asking about film for the front end. We serve Pfafftown drivers through our Lewisville area page.

Can You Put Ceramic Coating Over PPF?

Yes. A ceramic coating can go over paint protection film. XPEL, a film maker, says, “Yes, you can coat paint protection film (PPF) with ceramic coating,” and that it makes the surface easier to clean. So choosing film for the front end doesn’t rule out a coating.

If you already have film or are thinking about it, ask us when you call. We’ll talk through what makes sense for your car. Source: XPEL FAQs.

When Does Film Make Sense?

Film makes sense when rock chips on the front end are your main worry, such as on a car that spends a lot of time at highway speed. Edmunds notes that you’re “not forced to wrap your entire car,” so many owners film only high-impact areas and coat the rest.

We don’t install PPF in our shop. If your front end needs film, we can arrange it through a partner, and we’ll handle the coating and tint for the rest of your car.
