What’s the Downside of Ceramic Coating? (And Why It’s Still Worth It)

By Mike Holland, Owner

What’s the downside of ceramic coating? Honestly, there are only a few, and they’re easy to manage. It costs more on day one, the paint gets corrected first, it needs a short cure, and the car still needs a (much easier) wash. It won’t stop rock chips. For most drivers, the benefits far outweigh all of that, and over its life a coating costs less than repeated waxing.

Bermuda Run sits just north of Advance, bordering the Yadkin River, with I-40 running right past it. If you put highway miles on your car every week and park it in the sun at the course or the office, you want straight answers before you spend money protecting it. At Level Up Detailing in Lexington, NC, here’s what a coating gets you, what it costs per month, and how we handle each common concern.

Key Takeaways

  • Cost per month: our longer warranties work out to roughly $18 to $22 a month, compared with about $100 to $125 a month for a professional wax every 2 months.
  • Paint correction included: single-stage correction comes with every warrantied package, so your paint is corrected before it’s sealed in.
  • Easier care: a coated car washes faster and stays cleaner longer, and the $199 Ceramic Maintenance Wash is optional, never required.
  • Warranty: Owner’s Pride warranties up to 9 years, with no forced maintenance.
  • Simple habits: dry the car after washing to avoid water spots, and add paint protection film through our partner if rock chips are your top worry.

What You Get With a Ceramic Coating

Wax sits on top of your clear coat and wears off in weeks. A ceramic coating cures and bonds to the clear coat, so the protection lasts for years. Here’s what that means day to day:

  • Faster, easier washing: dirt, pollen and road brine release more easily, so the car rinses clean quicker and stays cleaner longer.
  • Deep gloss that lasts: we correct the paint first, and the coating locks in that corrected, high-gloss finish for years instead of weeks.
  • Sun and UV protection: the coating helps shield your clear coat from the sun that fades and dulls paint parked outside.
  • A tougher barrier against contaminants: bird droppings, tree sap, pollen and brine have a harder time getting a grip on the paint, so they’re easier to wash away before they do damage.
  • Swirl resistance: a coating’s harder surface helps resist the light swirls and marring that come from washing, which wax can’t do. It’s swirl-resistant, not swirl-proof, and our 9-year coating adds a self-healing top layer that helps with light marring.
  • Lower cost per year than waxing: you pay once instead of every couple of months (see the math below).
  • Warranty backing: Owner’s Pride warranties of 3, 5, 7 or 9 years, with no forced maintenance program.

What’s the Downside of Ceramic Coating? 6 Things to Know

These are the concerns we hear most, and how our packages handle each one.

1. The Up-Front Price (It’s Less Than Wax Over Time)

A coating is a bigger one-time purchase than a wax job, but spread it over its warranty and the longer packages work out to roughly $18 to $22 a month. Here are our current starting prices for a coupe or sedan, straight from our shop:

PackageStarting PriceWarrantyPaint CorrectionAbout Per Month
3-Year Wash & Coat$699Non-warrantied, lasts up to 3 yearsNot included$19 (over 3 years)
3-year ceramic coating$1,1993-year Owner’s Pride warrantySingle-stage included$33 (over 3 years)
5-year ceramic coating$1,3495-year Owner’s Pride warrantySingle-stage included$22 (over 5 years)
7-year ceramic coating$1,4997-year Owner’s Pride warrantySingle-stage included$18 (over 7 years)
9-year dual-layer self-healing coating$2,0999-year Owner’s Pride warrantySingle-stage included$19 (over 9 years)
Ceramic Maintenance Wash (optional care)$199Not required for any warrantyNot includedOptional

Now compare that with wax. Using our example of a professional wax at $200 to $250, redone about every 2 months, here’s how the totals stack up:

Time FrameProfessional Wax Every 2 Months ($200 to $250 Each)Level Up Coating (Coupe/Sedan, One Time)
1 year$1,200 to $1,500One payment covers the whole term
3 years$3,600 to $4,500$699 (Wash & Coat) or $1,199 (3-year)
5 years$6,000 to $7,500$1,349
7 years$8,400 to $10,500$1,499
9 years$10,800 to $13,500$2,099

Wax also doesn’t include paint correction. Our warrantied packages do. Larger vehicles cost more to coat (and to wax), and 2-stage correction is an extra charge quoted after we inspect the paint. If you want coating protection at the lowest price, the 3-Year Wash & Coat starts at $699. 2. Paint Correction Comes First (So It Looks Better Than New)

A coating is clear, so it seals in whatever is underneath. Car and Driver notes that even brand-new cars usually need at least one round of polishing to remove swirl marks, water spots and transport scratches. That’s why every warrantied package includes single-stage paint correction. We remove the swirls first, then lock in the shine, so your paint often looks better than the day you bought it. For heavier defects, 2-stage correction is available at an additional charge. Curious where your paint stands? Try our paint correction self-check.

3. A Brief Cure Time

A fresh coating needs a little time to fully harden, so go easy on water and washing for the first few days after pickup. Plan your appointment around the weather, and we’ll walk you through the simple aftercare when you pick up the car.

4. Washing Gets Faster, Not Optional

A coated car still gets washed, but it’s quicker and easier because dirt lets go of the paint. Car and Driver lists abrasive washing, harsh cleaners and contaminants left sitting on the paint as things that wear a coating down, so a gentle hand wash with a coating-safe car shampoo and a clean microfiber towel is all it takes. If you use a car wash, read our guide on taking a ceramic coated car through a car wash first. Our $199 Ceramic Maintenance Wash is there if you’d rather we handle it, but it’s optional. Owner’s Pride has no forced maintenance requirement, so you never have to buy a wash to keep your warranty.

5. Water Spots: A Simple Habit

Water beads up and rolls off a coated car, but drops that sit and dry in the sun can still leave minerals behind. Sprinkler overspray and rain that bakes on a hot hood are the usual causes.

The habit is easy: dry the car with microfiber after washing or a heavy rain, and rinse off sprinkler spray the same day. Because water sheets off a coating, drying goes quickly.

6. Rock Chips: Add Film Where You Need It

Car and Driver says a coating can offer some resistance to minor scratches and chemical etching, but it won’t prevent rock chips or other impact damage, and it isn’t a replacement for paint protection film. It also covers the paint, not the underbody or frame.

If highway gravel on the front end is your biggest worry, paint protection film is the product for that, and we can arrange it through a trusted partner. The coating still protects everything else on your paint. In winter, it helps brine rinse off the finish more easily, and a regular underbody rinse takes care of what’s underneath.

Is Ceramic Coating Worth It for Bermuda Run and Advance Drivers?

For most drivers who keep their cars a few years, yes. Local roads and weather are exactly what a coating is built for.

Davie County is in NCDOT Division 9, and in December 2025 WXII reported the division had 41 brine trucks and about 12,000 tons of salt ready for winter. NCDOT brine is water plus 23 percent salt, and a coated finish lets it rinse off more easily. Summers are hot too: NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals for the Mocksville 5SE station, the closest Davie County station, show about 41 days a year at 90°F or hotter. That’s a lot of sun on your clear coat, and a lot of days a coating’s UV protection is earning its keep.

Bermuda Run is about 15 miles from our Lexington shop, roughly half an hour without traffic. Clemmons is the next town over on I-40, and our page on ceramic coating, window tint and detailing in Clemmons covers everything we offer for drivers in Clemmons, Bermuda Run and Advance.

Jill Meade brought in her 2026 Honda CRV and wrote that “It had lots of swirls and scratches in the paint. Mostly from using automatic car washes.” She chose our 9-year self-healing coating, and like every warrantied package, it started with single-stage paint correction to take those swirls out before the coating locked in the shine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the downside of ceramic coating?

Just a few, and they’re easy to manage: a higher up-front price, paint correction first, a brief cure, regular (easier) washing, possible water spots and no rock-chip protection. Spread over the warranty, our longer packages run about $18 to $22 a month, far less than repeat waxing. Call or text (336) 780-7868 to set up an appointment.

Does ceramic coating stop rock chips?

A coating still protects your paint from sun, contaminants and light wash marring, but it isn’t built to stop rock chips. For chips, paint protection film is the answer, and we can arrange it through a trusted partner. Call or text (336) 780-7868 to set up an appointment.

Can a ceramic-coated car still get water spots?

It can, but it’s easy to prevent. Water beads and rolls off a coated car, so a quick microfiber dry after washing or rain, and rinsing off sprinkler spray the same day, keeps spots away. Call or text (336) 780-7868 to set up an appointment.

Do I have to buy the Ceramic Maintenance Wash to keep my warranty?

No. Owner’s Pride has no forced maintenance requirement. Our $199 Ceramic Maintenance Wash is optional care for owners who’d rather have us wash the car. Call or text (336) 780-7868 to set up an appointment.

Does ceramic coating protect against rust?

It protects your paint and helps road brine rinse off the finish more easily all winter. The underbody and frame aren’t covered by a paint coating, so a regular underbody rinse handles that part. Call or text (336) 780-7868 to set up an appointment.

Is paint correction included with ceramic coating?

Yes. Single-stage paint correction is included in every warrantied coating package, so swirls come out before the shine is locked in. 2-stage correction costs extra and is quoted after we inspect your paint. Call or text (336) 780-7868 to set up an appointment.

Final Thoughts on the Downsides of Ceramic Coating

The downsides of ceramic coating are real but small, and each one has an easy answer. In return you get corrected, glossy paint that washes easier, resists swirls, stands up to sun, sap and brine, and carries a warranty up to 9 years. At roughly $18 to $22 a month on our longer packages, it costs far less over time than waxing every couple of months.
