How Do You Protect Your Truck’s Paint Before Winter?

By Mike Holland, Owner

If your truck spent the summer towing to the lake, November is the quiet window between the last tow and the first brine trucks. Bugs, tar and ramp-lot sun leave marks a winter of washing will only highlight. In this blog, we’ll cover what a tow season does to truck paint, why November matters, whether ceramic coating for trucks is worth it, what it costs at Level Up and the order of operations before brine season.

Key Takeaways: Protect Truck Paint Before Winter

  • Wash first: bugs, sap, tar and road film etch paint when left in summer heat — remove them before coating.
  • November window: High Rock Lake’s recreational season ends October 31; NCDOT Division 9 brine comes next.
  • Ceramic coating for trucks: Owner’s Pride warranties up to 9 years; the 7-year is best when the truck is staying in the family for years.
  • Real truck prices: large trucks $1,699 / $1,849 / $1,999 / $2,599; midsize / small trucks from $1,499.
  • Correction included: single-stage paint correction comes with every warrantied package; two-stage is quoted after inspection.
  • No forced maintenance: the optional Ceramic Maintenance Wash helps the coating look its best and is never required for the warranty.

What Does a Summer of Towing Do to Truck Paint?

Highway miles to the lake leave a bug-covered grille, hood and mirrors. Consumer Reports’ chief mechanic says to get tree sap off as soon as possible, because it will eventually eat through the paint, especially as the days warm up. A PPG manager told Consumer Reports that sun-scorched insect material can etch certain automotive finishes, and bird droppings shrink and stress the clear coat.

Tar and road grime add to that load. Consumer Reports lists UV, acid rain, smog, bird droppings, bug guts, salt and tree sap among the things that can eat through paint and lead to oxidation. When soap won’t cut it, an automotive bug-and-tar remover and a thorough rinse are the next step — not another coat of wax on top of the mess.

Sun hours matter too. NOAA’s Lexington station averages about 38.9 days a year at 90°F or hotter, with a June–August average high of 87.6°F. A truck parked at a ramp lot all day sits in that heat. Hitch-area and lower-panel film — rear bumper, tailgate and lower doors — takes road spray and trailer-tire spray every trip. You already rinse the boat and trailer after each outing; the truck that pulled them needs attention too.

A wax helps for a few weeks. Consumer Reports’ tests found wax lasts only a few weeks and recommends waxing at least once a season. For the longer math, see wax vs ceramic coating cost.

Why November Is the Window Before Brine Season

High Rock Lake’s recreational season runs April 1 through October 31. In fall 2026, Cube Carolinas is holding the lake about 8 feet below full pond for dam maintenance through at least November 20, so for a lot of Davidson County boat owners the tow season is already over. That leaves November: the gap between the last tow and NCDOT’s first brine run, and a good window to clean up and protect the truck’s paint.

Davidson County roads fall under NCDOT Division 9. Brine is water plus about 23% salt, put down up to 48 hours before a storm. In December 2025, Division 9 had 41 brine trucks and about 12,000 tons of salt on hand, and crews asked drivers to stay about 150 feet back so the treatment ends up on the road, not on your paint. NOAA’s Lexington station also averages about 82 nights a year at or below 32°F — freeze nights when brine sticks around.

Our shop in Lexington is about 23 miles, roughly 40 minutes, from the Southmont side of the lake. A coating on the painted body, trim, wheel faces and lights makes brine and grime easier to wash off through winter. It is not rust-proofing and does not protect the underbody — keep washing brine off. For more on brine and coated paint, see ceramic coating and road brine.

Is Ceramic Coating for Trucks Worth It?

For a truck you plan to keep, usually yes. A ceramic coating bonds to the clear coat more strongly than a wax or sealant, so it lasts for years instead of weeks. Level Up’s Owner’s Pride coatings carry warranties up to 9 years. On the Lexington coating page, the 7-year option is described as best when the vehicle is staying in the family for years — a natural fit for a tow rig that already has years left on it.

Be honest about the limits. A coating does not stop rock chips, and it will not make a neglected clear coat look new by itself. That is why we inspect and correct first. For the trade-offs in plain language, read what’s the downside of ceramic coating. Everyday washing after the coat: can you take a ceramic coated car through a car wash.

We have coated plenty of trucks — heavy-duty diesels included — with exterior packages, interior packages and ceramic tint when customers want the full setup. Town-unknown jobs stay town-unknown; what matters is the process: decontaminate, correct, coat, then wash through winter.

  • 3-year: $1,699
  • 5-year: $1,849
  • 7-year: $1,999

Midsize SUVs and small trucks: 3-year $1,499 · 5-year $1,649 · 7-year $1,899 · 9-year $2,299. Wash & Coat, lasts up to 3 years (non-warrantied, no paint correction), is $699 for coupes, sedans, midsize SUVs and small trucks, and $799 for large trucks, SUVs and vans — see Wash & Coat. Prices are on our shop for reference.

Every warrantied package includes single-stage paint correction (swirl and light scratch reduction). Deeper two-stage correction costs extra and is quoted after we see the truck in good light — no standalone correction price. Not sure whether you need correction? Use the self-check in does my car need paint correction.

A 7-year large-truck coating at $1,999 works out to about $286 a year of warranty term — simple arithmetic, not a savings guarantee. For per-month coating math on other sizes, see ceramic coating cost per month. How the warranty tiers work: how to choose a ceramic coating warranty. Timing for a new vehicle before winter: ceramic coat a new car before winter.

The optional Ceramic Maintenance Wash every few months helps the coating look its best and is never required for the warranty. When quoting the shop price, it is the optional $199 maintenance wash. After a coating, wait 7 days before the first wash. Product page for price reference: Ceramic Maintenance Wash.

What Should You Do Before the First Brine Run?

  1. Wash and decontaminate. Bug and tar removal, iron decon and clay. Our warrantied packages start with a luxury hand wash, iron decon and clay bar.
  2. Inspect the paint in good light for swirls, etching and dull spots.
  3. Correct. Single-stage correction is included in every warrantied package; two-stage is quoted after inspection.
  4. Coat before brine season. Owner’s Pride on the body, trim, wheel faces and head and tail lights. Exterior packages take about 48 to 72 hours; it is a drop-off job at our shop in Lexington — not mobile. If a deposit comes up, coating appointments take a 30% nonrefundable deposit.
  5. Wash brine off through winter. A coating makes film easier to rinse; it does not replace washing.

We do not coat boats, trailers or truck beds — this post is about the truck’s painted body only. We also do not offer paint protection film (PPF). For more on truck coatings in general, see ceramic coating for trucks.
